How to Encrypt and Secure Your Digital Life
Why Should We Care About Encryption?
Most of us, don’t care about our data being collected by other companies while we surf the Internet, chat with friends or use our gadgets in general. People often think that only hackers use encryption and associate it with something dangerous and geeky. But in today’s world we should care about our data online and try to stay as anonymous as possible, because everything we do online is being somewhere logged and remains permanent. You give such data as your IP address, personal interests, location and much more to dozens of website daily without even thinking about it. In this article I will show you some easy steps to complete, so you stay secure and encrypted.
1. Encrypt Your Hard Drive and Your Smartphone
You can use BitLocker on Windows to encrypt your hard drive. To enable BitLocker go to Control Panel -> System and Security -> BitLocker Drive Encryption and click Turn on BitLocker
Mac users can use FileVault to encrypt their system. Choose Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Security & Privacy -> FileVault tab -> Lock button. Then enter an administrator name and password, thereon click Turn On FileVault.
You can also encrypt your smartphone. Below is the guide for Android users:
Open Settings -> Security -> Encrypt phone and follow on-screen instructions
Enabling encryption on iPhone is really easy. You just go to Settings -> Touch ID & Passcode and click Turn Passcode On. Ready!
2. Use VPN!
A VPN (Virtual Private Network) is a network technology that creates a secure network connection over a public network such as the Internet or a private network owned by a service provider. By using VPN everything you send from your computer over the Internet stays encrypted. Even your ISP can’t see what you’re doing online.
But there is also a wonderful solution for those who don’t want to pay!
You probably already heard about Opera browser. In April 2016 they announced that there will be a free VPN built into Opera for better online privacy. You can already download developer version with built in VPN here: https://www.opera.com/computer/beta
To enable VPN go to Settings -> Privacy & security and click on Enable VPN.
3. Use Different Passwords
That’s maybe an obvious tip, but it is very important. If it happens to you once that your email account gets hacked and you use the same password everywhere, you can say goodbye to your private data! There is a great software for managing passwords called LastPass. It’s a great tool to store and generate new passwords securely. Your passwords are kept secure and encrypted.
4. Use a Secure and Encrypted Messenger
